Horse Trainer Job Details:

Full time position available in Terang, Victoria for a skilled and experienced Harness Racing Horse Trainer.

Working under a registered trainer, you will be responsible for preparing horses to participate in harness racing competitions in Victoria, Specifically Trotters.

You will use your skills and knowledge to implement appropriate diet, training and exercise programmes for yearlings and young horses, including breaking in horses.

Specific tasks will include:

  • Designing and implementing training programs tailored to each individual horse’s needs
  • Assessing horses’ fitness levels
  • Breaking in young horses for standardbred racing (mainly trotters) by introducing them to new equipment such as bits and harnesses
  • Teaching animals to obey verbal and non-verbal commands
  • Maintain accurate records of training and progress for each horse
  • Observe and treat behavioural issues through positive training methods
  • Maintain peak fitness in the horses for optimum racing performance
  • Travel with horses to races and provide support on race days
  • Monitoring the weight, diet, exercise routine, and general health of a horse to ensure it remains fit for racing
  • Diagnosing physical problems with a horse, such as muscle strain or injury, and recommending treatment options
  • Maintaining animal health records, treating minor injuries and reporting serious conditions to Veterinarians

We require you to have:

– At least 3 years’ experience as horse trainer including working with yearlings and trotting young stock

– At least 2 years’ experience working with Harness Racing Horses

– Experience in hoof trimming trotters suitable for racing

– in depth knowledge of standardbreds pacing and trotting practices

– In-depth knowledge of horse behaviour, anatomy, and physiology

– In-depth knowledge of equine welfare practices

Ability to adapt training programs to suit individual horses’ needs

Sound judgment and decision-making skills

– Organizational skills

– An Australian driver licence

– Relevant Certificate IV qualification and advantage, or else at least three years’ experience

We are offering excellent working conditions and will pay a salary of $70 000 + superannuation to the successful candidate.
