Job Position: Volunteer in Australia – Help Out on the Great Barrier Reef
Program Fees : from $1045 AUD
Company: International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ)
Location: Cairns, QLD, Australia
Imagine waking up in tropical Australia, grabbing your snorkel, and heading out to the reef—not just to admire it, but to help protect it.
This marine conservation volunteer program in Cairns gives you the chance to spend your days in the ocean, working on real projects that support reef health. You’ll help with reef surveys, clean up marine debris, and even get to track wild sea turtles
What You’ll Be Doing
You don’t need to be a marine biologist to join. You’ll get all the training you need, and the team will make sure you’re prepped and safe out there.
Here’s the kind of stuff you’ll get involved with:
- Snorkel & Survey the Reef: You’ll head out into the water, keeping track of fish, corals, and other marine life. It’s basically snorkeling with a purpose.
- Clean Up the Coastline: Marine debris is a huge issue, and you’ll help collect and document trash that ends up in the ocean.
- Swim with Sea Turtles (if you stay longer): Stick around for two weeks or more and you’ll help monitor wild turtles—identify species, track behaviors, and contribute to real conservation work. Bonus: you’ll be in the water with them!

Who This is For

What You’ll Need
- You must be at least 18 years old
- Be able to swim 50 meters comfortably (you’ll do a swim test when you arrive)
- A background check (just a basic one)

Why It’s Worth It
This program gives you the chance to explore one of the most beautiful ecosystems on Earth—and actually help protect it. You’ll meet people from around the world, learn a ton about marine life, and make a real impact.
And honestly? Snorkeling with sea turtles and contributing to ocean conservation… not a bad way to spend a few weeks.
