About Melbourne

Melbourne is regularly listed in the top 10 most liveable cities in the world in the annual Global Liveability Index, awarded to cities with the highest score for stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. It has a population of more than 5 million people and is renowned for its multicultural community, with over a third of Melbournians born overseas. It is considered one of the most LGBTQIA+ friendly cities in the world, and diversity and inclusion are supported in the workplace.

Melbourne is well supported by public transport and nature including beaches, mountains and national parks are close by. There are festivals and attractions on year-round to suit all tastes including world-renowned events like the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Australian Open and Australian Grand Prix. Eating out is also a favourite pastime for Melbournians, whether it’s brunch at a cafe or dinner at restaurants specialising in cuisines from around the world.

Many Melbournians choose to live in the bustling inner city while others enjoy larger blocks in the suburbs close to parkland. Melbourne has excellent public education and a thriving public health system, supported by a highly functioning private health system and a variety of associated health services supported by both the state and federal governments. Our weather is considered mild and we enjoy distinct seasons – with warm summer days, sunny autumns, cool winters and fresh springs.

Staff experience

Sunshine Hospital’s Associate Nurse Unit Manager (ANUM) Von Madrinan, originally from the Philippines, came to Melbourne after five years working in the UK.

Von and his wife moved to Melbourne’s western suburbs in 2022 and he loves the cultural diversity and friendly disposition of his new community.

“Australia is close to the Philippines. There ARE only a few hours difference in time and the weather is also much better than the UK!”

“I feel at home at Western Health. My colleagues are very friendly, welcoming and sociable.”

“There are so many opportunities here to extend myself professionally and the nurse-to-patient ratios (one nurse to four patients) and work life balance is great.”

The experience of working in the Philippines, the UK and now Australia, means Von has a unique insight into the health systems from the perspective of a nurse and manager.

“The illnesses are much the same, but the way we treat them and the technology available to us, is very different. The workload is much more manageable and there is a higher standard of general healthcare here.

“I keep telling my friends and former colleagues to come to Australia!”
