About the Team

Research Services are responsible for providing integrated administrative and management support for researchers and research activity across the University, with a strong focus on research development, income generation, ethical review and the coordination of research student training and development.

About the Role

The Animal Welfare Officer will be required to build relationships within the office, the broader University and across the sector. You will be required to travel to the facilities across a number of campuses for meeting and inspections.

The primary role of the Animal Welfare Officer is to:

  • Ensure the welfare of animals used in research and teaching by staff and students at the University in line with the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and use of Animals for Scientific Purposes, the Animal Research Act 1985, and the Animal Research Regulation 2005.
  • Provide contemporary and up-to-date technical advice and training to researchers, students and staff in medical and surgical techniques as well as health monitoring of animals used for research and teaching.
  • Provide, through close liaison with the Animal Ethics Committee, leadership in the maintenance of standards of animal care and use across the University.
  • Provide professional veterinary advice to researchers and students.
  • Assist researchers in the development of Animal Research Authority applications to the WSU Animal Care and Ethics Committee (ACEC).
  • Support ACEC in the assessment of documents submitted to the monthly committee meeting (which include adverse event reports, amendments, new applications).

About You

To be successful in this role you will have a degree in Veterinary Science and eligibility for registration as a veterinarian surgeon in NSW. You will also have demonstrated postgraduate experience in clinical practice with experience overseeing the welfare of a range of animal species used in research and/or teaching.

This is a full-time, ongoing position located at Western’s Werrington South Campus.

Remuneration Package: HEW Level 8 $126,502 to $140,431 p.a. (comprising Salary of $106,896 to $118,666 p.a., plus Superannuation and Leave Loading).
