Dairy Cattle Farm Worker Position Summary

The Woolwash Trust is looking for a skilled and experienced Dairy Cattle Farm Worker to join our farming enterprise situated 6 kms from Millicent, (township of 5,000 people with several schools and supermarkets) in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, 405km southeast of Adelaide.

The 2000+ acre farm has pivot irrigation and produces own pasture, hay, silage, and fodder crops to accommodate approximately 1400 dairy heifers. Dairy heifers are raised from 120-150 kg and remain on property until 8 weeks before calving.

Duties include (but not limited to):

  • Assisting with maintaining the health and welfare of livestock, including inspecting, and reporting on the condition of livestock
  • Providing livestock with feed and water and implementing livestock feeding and welfare programs
  • Establishing pastures and crops for livestock production
  • Herding and droving livestock and other farming operations
  • Undertaking animal husbandry duties for livestock 
  • Understand reproductive programs, including the role of artificial insemination and nutrition to promote herd fertility.
  • Management, detection of oestrous and pregnancy
  • Implement calving procedures, if required including ability to physically conduct unsupervised internal assessments. 
  • Undertaking general farming and maintenance activities such as erecting and repairing fences, maintaining pasture and pasture renovation programs, and maintaining other infrastructure
  • Operating and maintaining general farm machinery to feed livestock and manage water supply and irrigation systems.
  • Operating data collection and farm technology systems
  • Operate computer equipment and software packages requiring set-up and basic operation.
  • Implement the response to emergencies for both occupational health and safety emergencies and animal welfare emergencies.
  • Participate in enterprise/industry training sessions and workshops as required.

Skills and Experience

Previous experience at this level or similar is essential. You will need to demonstrate that you have:

  • At least a relevant AQF Certificate II or higher qualification or equivalent; or 2 years of relevant work experience undertaken in the last 3 years, to substitute for the qualification.
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Current Driver’s Licence

This is a full-time position which will involve weekend or public holidays work and some unplanned hours of work where the need arises (paid accordingly).

Position is open to permanent Australian residents and NZ citizens. Sponsorship may be available only to suitably qualified candidates and must undergo a skills assessment.
