The Baffinland Community Liaison Officer (BCLO) will serve as representative of the Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation (Baffinland or BIM) in Igloolik. Reporting to the Northern Affairs Manager in Iqaluit, you will assist in providing information to the community, conducting various community meetings, assist in developing and coordinating skills/training programs, supporting recruitment programs, assist in implementing commitments as outlined in the IIBA and Project Certificate and various other tasks and responsibilities as required.

*The ideal candidate is resident and will be based in Igloolik, Nunavut*

Main Accountabilities

  • Work with Baffinland and Contractor Fly-In/Fly-Out (FIFO) employees by contacting them.
  • Help taxi service provider in picking up FIFO employees and dropping them off.
  • Being at the airport to provide and contact FIFO employees with regards to their flight.
  • Support potential candidates to apply for training programs offered by Baffinland (i.e. Apprenticeship and Work Readiness Program).
  • Participate in community meetings to provide updates on Baffinland activities and/or share updates to Baffinland on community initiatives.
  • Assist in the development of various presentations within the company.
  • Assist in the preparation of meetings in the community with Baffinland and at times for contracted partners with Baffinland. (booking catering, venue, vehicle rental, hotel, translator)
  • As required, translating and Support-interpreting service to Baffinland staff and management.
  • As required, provide assistance to the translation team by either translating, or proofreading.
  • Must be able to take minutes at meetings and have them typed and formatted in a professional manner.
  • Provide support to Baffinland training initiatives conducted within Community.
  • Support recruitment initiatives conducted by both Baffinland and its Contractors.
  • Assist HR in exit interviews, handling of grievances and complaints, Pay & benefits functions, onboarding training.
  • Assist contractors in contacting employees and connecting employees to HR.
  • Take photos of social activities Baffinland supported and Baffinland events, along with getting media consent forms signed.
  • Provide feedback to Management about issues/concerns that are raised in the community in a timely basis.
  • Prepare monthly reports to Northern Affairs Assistant Manager.
  • Work and support the Community Relations Guide and Inuit Knowledge Holder.
  • Organize & plan for social events.
  • Other duties as assigned/needed

Main Qualifications

  • Must know how to read and write Syllabics.
  • Must know how to work with MS Word, Excel,MS Outlook etc.
  • Proven ability to communicate with key stakeholders including community members, Inuit Associations and government agencies.
  • Must have good people skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and complete tasks on a timely basis.
  • Nunavut Land Claims Beneficiary, with a thorough knowledge of Inuit Culture is an asset.
  • Must be fluent in Inuktitut and English.
  • Proven ability to work independently and in a professional manner.
