Reporting to the Deputy Minister, the Director, Policy and Consumer Affairs (Director) is accountable for the development and co-ordination of corporate plans, policies and legislation in support the Government of Nunavut’s mandate map and the Department’s vision, mission, mandate, goals and objectives. Authority, responsibility and accountability include research, corporate and external communications, community development and legislation development.
The Director supports the Minister by developing policy, coordinating briefing materials, responses to Members of the Legislative Assembly, ministerial correspondence and preparing and maintaining records of Request for Decisions by Cabinet. This position is responsible for collecting and analyzing information to evaluate departmental achievement and for providing department-wide program planning information and evaluation. The Director is also responsible for internal and external communications and research.
The Director is accountable for effective and efficient management of divisional resources and for contributing to achieving the vision and mandate of the Department. An important part of that responsibility is ensuring the Departmental initiatives, policies and programs are in the spirit of Katujjiluta are consistent with legislation and the Departmental Business Plan are financially feasible and are a good use of available resources as such advises all Community and Government Services Directors and Special Advisors appropriately. The Director ensures the quality and coordination of all departmental submissions, presentations, reports and responses to the Assembly. He/she is also responsible for the development of Cabinet Decision papers and reviews of new and current policies. This position manages the Division’s financial and human resources effectively and efficiently. The Director is also responsible for selecting, directing, motivating and evaluating staff to work toward Departmental and Divisional objectives.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized post-secondary degree in related fields such as Political Sciences, Law and Management, Business Administration or related field, plus five (5) years of progressive managerial experience in policy, planning, program management and/or related field. The candidate must have effective
communication skills. This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in Inuktitut/Inuinnaqtun would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
