Summary:

The Farm & Ranch Worker is responsible for maintaining both cattle and bison herds and maintaining the land on PBPN grounds. Duties will include but are not limited to fixing and maintaining fencing on the reservation, driving and operating farm machinery to plant, cultivate, spray, cut timber and brush, harvest, and hay for PBPN, erosion control, planting grasses, controlled burning of pasture/ditches, as well as building and maintaining ponds, terraces, waterways, and maintaining sheds, barns, etc. This position will perform a variety of duties that are the responsibility of the Land Management Department.

Minimum Requirements:

Driving: Must have Non-Commercial Kansas Driver’s license (farm use) Class A, or willingness to obtain one within 90 days of employment and be insurable with the Nation’s insurance.

Experience:

  • Six months to 2+ years of applicable experience as a farm and/or ranch hand or land & agriculture maintenance. To include but not limited to farming, ranching, crop/land maintenance, livestock care and maintenance.
  • Must have a Pesticide Applicator certificate or willing to obtain one within 90-days of employment.
  • Must possess a record of satisfactory attendance and performance in all prior and current employment.

Education: High school diploma or GED

Interpersonal Skills: Normal courtesy in dealing with others is required. Work involves minimal contacts, usually within the department. Contact usually involving routine, non-sensitive issues. External contacts are typically limited to incidental contacts with local community members.

Knowledge:

  • Farming & Ranching: Knowledge of materials, methods, and heavy equipment involved in the maintenance of large undomesticated animals and land. Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance. Basic knowledge of animal science and care.
  • Public Safety & Security: Knowledge of occupational safety, policies, and procedures, when engaging with hazardous materials and large unpredictable animals promoting a safety culture within the Nation.
  • Mechanical & Mathematical: Basic knowledge of farming equipment and tools/supplies. Basic knowledge of mathematics and simple formulas. Basic knowledge of chemicals. English Grammar: Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar, with the ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Interpersonal skills: remains open to others’ ideas and exhibits a willingness to try new processes.
  • Critical Thinking: Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Active Listening: Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Judgement and Decision Making: Considering the relative cost and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  • Dependable: Arrive to work on time, follows instructions, responds positively to direction and feedback. Ability to be reliable, punctual, and dependable to meet the needs of the department and Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.
  • Organized: Use time efficiently and develops realistic action plans for assigned work orders. Is accurate, thorough and monitors own work for quality and meets deadlines for all assignments with little to no errors.
  • Operational Skills: Controlling operations of equipment or systems. Watching and reading gauges, dials, or indicators to ensure a machine or piece of equipment is working properly.

  • Time Management: Must be available to work the assigned schedule and available as needed to work a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the position, which may include nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
