Our client is a highly reputable agribusiness with a continually expanding and diverse portfolio that encompasses tree cropping, broadacre, viticulture, and other sectors. They are firmly dedicated to pursuing sustainable solutions through the implementation of modern sustainability initiatives and advanced farm management techniques.
Their apple portfolio, spread across two locations in Loxton and Nangwarry, comprises over 300 hectares. Currently, it contributes to approximately 30% of South Australia’s apple yield, and they have ambitious plans for further development in the near future.
Your Role
Working closely with the CEO, this opportunity offers challenges and diversity from the outset. You will be responsible for building a team in Nangwarry, playing a pivotal role in orchard expansion and development (additional 80ha), as well as overseeing an existing, experienced team at our client’s other property in Loxton, SA. Furthermore, you will also be instrumental in managing new acquisitions that may arise.
Based in Nangwarry, this role will require you to be hands-on initially while efficiently overseeing the day-to-day operations of our client’s 100-ha apple orchard, which is located only 20 minutes north of Mount Gambier. This well-established property boasts robust farming infrastructure and consistently yields an impressive annual harvest of 10,000+ bins of premium apples.
- Collaborate with the CEO to plan, organise, implement, and monitor orchard operations.
- Budgeting, project management, asset management and the overall strategic direction of the apple portfolio.
- Manage and oversee contract labour operations – 80 to 100 during peak periods.
- Enhance supermarket-grade apple yield by executing orchard activities accurately and on schedule.
- Monitor and report development and orchard activities to the CEO.
- Contribute to annual budget preparation and ensure expenditure aligns with budgets.
- Build and lead a results-oriented team.
- Promote a safe working environment, maintain compliant safety records in line with WHS requirements.
About You
Our ideal candidate will possess significant expertise in a similar role, along with a comprehensive understanding of the full range of horticultural tree cropping operations. Although prior experience in apple cropping is preferred, it is not an absolute requirement.
We are looking for an individual who can combine practicality with a genuine passion for the field, and who also has strong commercial acumen, including proficiency in financial management and budgeting.
To excel in this role, it is important you can address the following –
- Previous experience in management role within apples is essential.
- Tertiary qualification(s) in horticulture or a relevant field.
- Displays expertise in managing a sizable contractor base.
- Possesses an understanding of GLOBAL G.A.P. compliance.
- Proven experience in modern mechanical-based orchard operations.
- Possesses a comprehensive understanding of apple production.
- Experience in development of greenfield orchards will be highly regarded though not essential.
- High degree of computer literacy.
