Can Mars support plant growth?

It is doubtful whether Mars planet can support plant growth. The problem is that Mars is too cold. Research has shown that Mars is farther from the sun more than the earth. Therefore, it is bound to be colder than the earth. Besides, Mars has a thin atmosphere. All the elements that are needed to support plant growth are available in the soil, and the atmosphere. It is doubtful whether the thin atmosphere can support plant growth on Mars.

Summer is the hottest season on earth. During such period in Mars, the equator can reach up to 20 degrade centigrade during the night period of summer the temperature will get down to less than -73 degrees centigrade. At that low temperature, there is nothing that can survive even those that are considered the coldest tolerant arctic plants. Under that temperature, it would be extremely difficult for anybody to think of growing plants on Mars.

Which conditions is it possible to grow plants on Mars?

Given the natural conditions, it would be inconceivable for anybody to think of growing plants on Mars. However, plants can grow in that atmosphere in a heated condition. In a heated greenhouse and additional lighting provided to deal with lower light levels on mars, plants can be grown on Mars. Mars required additional light intensity before it can support the plant.

Moreover, it would not be easy to discover liquid water on Mars but that would not be a problem. Mars soils are composed of ice. It is possible to melt the ice into liquid water. To support plant growth on mars, the carbon dioxide available in the Martian atmosphere can make for photosynthesis which plants are required to grow. Still plant and human life survival are not possible without the increase of the atmospheric pressure. These are the necessities that are needed before anybody can think of growing plants on Mars.

These are some of the basic requirements before anybody can think of growing plants on Mars. Apart from that, there are nitty-gritty requirements for plants to grow and thrive on that planet.
