Position Summary
Operates, monitors, and services all aspects of the MSU South Campus Anaerobic Digester and Compost facilities. Included in the operations is an anaerobic digester, associated material holding tanks, transfer pumps, biogas handling equipment, solid-liquid separation system, combined heat and power (CHP) system, solid manure storage, and compost operation. This is an essential position to the University.
- Conducts the daily operations of the South Campus Anaerobic Digester Facility following established procedures to operate mechanical equipment associated with anaerobic digester.
- Conducts the daily operations of the South Campus Composting Facility to create a value-added manure export.
- Performs preventative maintenance on all equipment associated with both facilities.
- Maintain cleanliness of the facility daily through use of power washer and hand tools.
- Assist with repairs and system improvements at the facilities.
- Assist with the coordination and scheduling of imported feedstocks and exported finished products.
- Assist with compiling, organizing and evaluating data to provide reports and operational status.
- Maintain supply inventory for both facilities.
- Oversee and instruct students as necessary.
- Work with researchers and graduate students to implement projects to ensure coordination and compatibility with digester daily operations.
- Provide occasional tours and overview of general plant operational activities.
- Operate a payloader to move and load facility feedstocks and finished compost.
- Operate a truck with a snow plow.
- Will split time between the two facilities with 50% of time spent at the digester facility and 50% of time spent at the compost facility.
- This position requires weekends, holidays, standby time, and overtime.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors, subject to all weather conditions, in hot/cold, dusty and noisy areas.
- Work is frequently completed alone with minimal onsite supervision.
- Work involves regular contact with livestock manure, food waste, and restaurant grease.
- Work includes viewing gauges and instruments, which involves visual acuity and color perception.
- Work involves bending, climbing, twisting, and regular lifting of 75 lbs.
- Work may involve wearing Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) during emergency conditions.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
- One year satisfactory agricultural work experience.
- Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator license(s) is necessary.
- Frequent lifting of over 75 pounds is required.
- May require possession of appropriate Pesticide Application Registration/Certification.
- May require possession or attainment of an MSU Fork Lift operator’s permit prior to completion of applicable probation or trial period.
Desired Qualifications
Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position:
- Completion of Anaerobic Digester Operators Training and Compost Operators Training within first year of employment.
- Familiarity and ability to use common hand tools
- Basic knowledge of the skilled trades
- Experience maintaining industrial equipment
- Basic knowledge of animal agriculture
- Knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, the ability to use e-mail and the Internet, the ability to utilize and create electronic spreadsheets for data collection, and development of a basic operational understanding of the anaerobic digester.

Work Hours
Begin as Monday-Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm for initial training period, then changes to Thursday-Monday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.
