The Labour Relations department at the University of Toronto invites applications from outstanding candidates for the position of Labour Relations Consultant. U of T is the largest and most prestigious research-intensive university in Canada. The University is a diverse and dynamic labour relations environment with more than 25 bargaining units and collective agreements in areas including student services, laboratories, caretaking, skilled trades, IT professionals, teaching assistants and more.

The successful applicant will work closely and collaboratively with assigned client groups, providing advice and counsel on the interpretation and application of core requirements of collective agreements and the investigation and resolution of grievances and the grievance/arbitration process. This role is also responsible for providing Labour Relations focused training to line management and Human Resources generalists regarding Labour Relations issues and relevant legislation.

As an integral part of a highly collaborative and consultative team of Labour Relations and Human Resources professionals, the Labour Relations Consultant is responsible for actively supporting the collective bargaining process with designated unions as a member of or a resource to the bargaining team and for administering collective agreements while fostering a positive and constructive work environment and an engaged and productive workforce.

Qualifications Required:

I. EDUCATION:

University degree required, preferably with a specialty in Industrial Relations. Masters of Industrial Relations or other advanced degree is strongly preferred.

II. EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of five (5) years progressively responsible and related experience in a professional Labour Relations and/or Human Resources generalist capacity in a large, complex and multi-faceted unionized environment. Experience supporting and/or participating in collective bargaining, collective agreement implementation and interpretation required. Experience advising and supporting client groups comprised of HR professionals and various levels of line management required. Grievance/arbitration process management experience required. Experience working with complex costing methodologies and dealing with complex pension and benefits issues are highly desirable. Additional HR and/or line management experience is an asset. Extensive knowledge of labour relations and related employment legislation and practice is necessary.

III. SKILLS:

Strong data analysis and manipulation skills are necessary.

IV. OTHER:

Strong verbal and written communication, analytical, organizational and quantitative skills. Excellent interpersonal and listening skills. Demonstrated track record of effective negotiating skills in a multi-faceted and sophisticated environment strongly preferred. Consulting, mediation and facilitation skills. Solid presentation and training capabilities. Excellent judgement and relationship management skills. Well-developed ability to persuade and gain consensus. Proactive service orientation. Awareness and appreciation of diversity.
