Department of Plant Sciences – UTIA

A Post-Doctoral Research Associate position in controlled environment plant physiology is available starting October 1st or later in the laboratory of Kellie Walters in The Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Tennessee. This is a full-time, regular position.

Qualifications

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct independent controlled environment agriculture (CEA) research in greenhouses and/or an indoor vertical farm.
  • Quantify phytonutrient or volatile compound changes by analyzing plant tissue samples with a GCMS and/or HPLC.
  • Analyze and report plant growth, development, and phytonutrient results for greenhouse and indoor farm systems.
  • Author peer-reviewed publications.

The candidate will be involved in a wide range of research activities in laboratory and plant production spaces with the goal of improving controlled environment food production yield and quality. This position may require travel to outlying locations (10-15%).

Salary: Commensurate with training and experience

Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications include a PhD in Plant Sciences, Biochemistry, or related field and experience in controlled environment plant production. Candidates who are currently obtaining a PhD will also be considered, but the degree must be conferred by the official start date. A strong publication record and experience with laboratory equipment for chemical analysis (e.g. GCMS or HPLC) is highly desired. The candidate must possess excellent written and oral English skills, be self-motivated, highly organized, and willing to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students to conduct greenhouse, growth chamber, and laboratory research.
