About the Role:

Global BC is looking for two permanent, full-time Reporter/Producers to join the #1 newsroom in Western Canada. Reporting to the Assistant News Director, the successful candidates would be responsible for generating and producing news content for Global BC on TV, radio, and online as needed. These positions will require working regular weekends and may involve a variety of shifts including early mornings, days, evenings, late nights, and holidays as needed. These are Group 4 positions under the current collective agreement.

You will contribute by:

The following is an outline of some but not all of the primary functions and responsibilities for these positions:

  • Recognizing, chasing, and delivering news content for multiple platforms.
  • Pitching original and enterprise stories.
  • On-air reporting for Global BC, BC1, and CKNW 980 radio as required.
  • General assignment reporting, segment producing, and live hits as required.
  • Writing and vetting compelling, accurate news copy, including story leads, bumpers, and promos.
  • Writing and producing reporter packages, when required.
  • Writing and producing online stories and video, when required.
  • Writing and producing radio stories, when required.
  • Developing creative ways to deliver news content.
  • Developing news content through a diverse and inclusive lens, including through the lens of Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Liaising with assignment desk for stories, cameras, live resources, and reporters for breaking and developing news.
  • Creating news content using desktop editing systems.
  • Conducting news interviews.
  • Monitoring all news sources, including feeds, wires, and social media.
  • Maintaining Global News’ high production standards.
  • Other duties as required.

Skills and experience you will bring:

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent experience in television broadcasting or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years’ TV news production and control room experience.
  • Experience filing for TV, radio, and online.
  • Strong news writing skills.
  • Proven strong editorial news judgment, with solid research abilities.
  • Working knowledge of all newsroom production software.
  • Working knowledge of desktop editing, using Grass Valley Stratus/Edius.
  • Proven ability to access and interpret property searches, title searches, court records, and civil filings for all jurisdictions.
  • Proven ability to write and execute Freedom of Information requests for all levels of government.
  • Demonstrated experience in inclusive journalism, with extensive experience in Indigenous storytelling.
  • Knowledge of the Indigenous populations in BC, trauma reporting, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission calls to action.
  • Proven ability to multitask, working quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines;
  • Knowledge of online news content production and distribution and writing for an online and social media audience.
  • Willingness to adapt to rapidly changing technology and workflows, as well as learn new skills in a multi-faceted digital news operation.
  • Familiarity with the current state of online news reporting and its future development.
  • Experience in updating online and broadcast content with a content management system an asset.
  • Possess excellent people skills, with the ability to work independently, effectively, and cooperatively in a team environment.
