Job Description

Avon Downs is 70km west of Camooweal, Queensland and 250km northwest of Mount Isa. Avon is a breeding property, producing cattle for AACo’s Wagyu brands. Avon property has been owned by AACo for 100 years, this is an impressive milestone for AA.

A Station Hand contributes to the livestock program by undertaking duties such as mustering and processing livestock, monitoring pastures, environment management, machinery operations and maintenance, general station duties and repairs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out duties in a planned way, following work schedules, organising materials and equipment prior to commencing work
  • Carry out cattle husbandry duties – muster on horse, draft, process, wean and truck cattle, in accordance with the procedures in the AACo Livestock Manual and the Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Cattle
  • Handle, ride, shoe, feed and care for horses in compliance with AACo animal welfare and WHS standards
  • Operate machinery as required and within licence limits, following all safety precautions
  • Operate, maintain, ride and muster on two-wheeler motorbike/UTV
  • Carry out station repairs and maintenance (e.g. yards, fences, water sources, roads and quarters)
  • Maintain personal equipment in reliable condition
  • Undertake domestic duties (e.g. butchering and camp cooking) as requested by the station manager

Skills & Experience:

  • Good cattle handling skills
  • Current Drivers Licence
  • Demonstrated competency in all tasks reasonably required of a station hand
  • Ability to work both alone and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to organise/prioritise tasks and meet deadlines, whilst working under pressure
  • Mature and rational approach to problem solving
