Volunteer Coordinator for Second Harvest Food Bank Job Details:

The Volunteer Coordinator serves a vital role managing all volunteer services for Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania and The Seed Farm. Working with Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB) and The Seed Farm (TSF) staff, the Volunteer Coordinator assures that all volunteer (individuals, community, and corporate groups) needs are met during their period of service. The Volunteer Coordinator provides volunteer support to all departments of Second Harvest Food Bank, serving as the volunteer recruiter, trainer and facilitator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develops and implements volunteer programs for SHFB and The Seed Farm. Represent SHFB and TSF to volunteers in a professional and courteous manner, understanding the importance of volunteers to our mission.
  • Creates and maintains partnerships with corporations, community-based organizations and other entities to support efforts to recruit volunteers.
  • Responsible for the processing, orientation and assignment of all volunteers and volunteer groups, in consultation with the staff. Tasks includes recruiting, screening, selecting, placing and training volunteers; planning, assigning and occasionally directing work; appraising performance; rewarding volunteers; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Provides monthly list of volunteers and corporations to the development team.
  • Acts as a liaison between volunteers and staff.
  • Organizes and assists with special events and projects as needed with assistance from department staff.
  • Promotes SHFB and volunteerism by attending appropriate outside events as needed and available.
  • Supervises PA Senior Box and Military Share packs on a monthly basis.
  • Establishes donated product sorting system and update products in inventory database when appropriate.
  • Establishes TSF harvesting/gleaning program during growing season.
  • Maintains volunteer database, including the scheduling, tracking, and reporting; Assists with the data clean up and migration to donor database, as appropriate.
  • Maintains other data for the department as necessary and appropriate; Cross trains for other departmental tasks.
  • Supervises volunteers during tasks/assignments and show/share responsibility for the overall Volunteer Experience at SHFB.
  • Skilled at project planning, identifying the stakeholders, determining their volunteer requirements and expectations, and, to the extent possible, managing their influence in relation to the requirements to ensure a successful volunteer experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to SHFB’s work to provide food security.
  • Demonstrated ability and comfort in working with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.
  • Exceptional people skills, comfort in speaking before large groups and passion about volunteerism.
  • An ability and vision to create new programming to meet SHFB needs and ability to follow-through and implement projects with little guidance or precedents.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisors/senior management of SHFB.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A high school diploma required; Associate or Bachelor’s degree in communication-oriented field preferred;
  • 3 years of related experience with a minimum of 1 year’s experience with volunteers and managing a team;
  • Experience in the Food industry

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated computer proficiency including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to work independently with high degree of concentration and task focused.
  • Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to detail, coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously and set priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects/events and adhere to deadlines in a high energy, fast paced environment
  • Experience with/willing to learn picking warehouse orders to set up volunteer repack stations (including use of forklift and pallet jacks).
  • Experience with/willing to learn basics of fresh produce harvesting, washing, packing, and storing.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and keep accurate records, and to perform basic mathematical calculations
  • Demonstrated ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Donor/volunteer database experience preferred
  • Good public speaking skills
  • Superior organizational skills
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record
  • Personal vehicle or access to independent transportation required
  • Proof of motor vehicle insurance (for use of personal vehicle)
  • Food Safety Manager’s Certificate [may be acquired after hire]
  • Forklift Certification [may be acquired after hire]
  • PA State Police Criminal background clearance required
  • Child Abuse background clearance required
  • FBI Fingerprinting background clearance required
