CMTY EDUC SPEC 2 (Livestock Medicine Youth Outreach Coordinator) Job Details:
Under the supervision of the PI, the position creates a framework for outreach opportunities at the high school level that increases the number of students in California interested in pursuing a career in livestock veterinary medicine. This will further help expand internship opportunities for high school students at the Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Center in Tulare. To achieve these objectives, outreach materials will be created such as power point presentations, workbooks, leaflets, etc. of what possibilities exist in the field of livestock medicine as well as point out funding options for veterinary school, including available scholarships at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine with input from the School of Veterinary Medicine’s admission office and other stakeholders. Academic prerequisites and ways to finance a veterinary education will be outlined as well as examples given of successful livestock veterinarians who have come from a non-traditional or disadvantaged background. A database of high schools, their career counselors, and possible opportunities such as career days and makes these available to participating veterinarians via a webpage and other outreach modalities will be created. Recruit, train, and deploy individuals who will act as ambassadors for the School of Veterinary Medicine during visits to high schools and to deliver the information created in the outreach materials. Create a dedicated webpage in order for veterinarians to search for career days and other outreach events. Expand opportunities for interested high school students to gain experiences in livestock veterinary medicine settings is crucial. Work with faculty and staff at the Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Center in Tulare to help revamp the already existing internship at the center’s milk quality lab and develop a second internship to include on-farm clinical exposure. Create informational materials based on discussions with Tulare staff and geared towards high school students on internship possibilities and reach out to high schools in the Tulare unified school district to promote these opportunities.
