About This Role
A Lead Engineer at Very is an individual who operates with a high degree of knowledge and accountability for the delivery of services to our customers. They provide excellent technical leadership and delivery skills, as it pertains to complex, multi-faceted projects at Very. They have a strong executive presence, which gives major client stakeholders the confidence that we will deliver, and gives our team the confidence and accountability to do so.
As a Lead Engineer in the Software Practice you’ll be part of a team of full-stack and mobile engineers who are dedicated to creating cutting-edge solutions for a wide range of clients and domains. We embrace an agile development process, where the focus is on swiftly creating functional vertical slices of the product and then rapidly learning and iterating. We are looking for cloud architects willing to innovate on existing IoT cloud solutions and find ways to deliver software solutions, faster.
What You’ll Be Working On
As a Lead Cloud Solutions Architect, you will lead the software practice in ensuring our cloud infrastructure and architecture is scalable, secure and cost optimized. You will lead this effort across multiple engagements that are responsible for end-to-end development of IoT products. You will take ultimate ownership and accountability for the cloud solutions that Very delivers across projects.
This will be accomplished by hands-on implementation, auditing and reviewing and partnering with the delivery team to help educate and provide guidance around our cloud solutions. To ensure that you have the resources necessary to succeed in your role, you’ll work closely with Very’s Directors and Executives through regular meetings and processes.
Across our disciplines, these are the types of technologies you can expect to encounter:
– Custom and off-the-shelf gateways and nodes leveraging multiple wireless communications protocols such as Bluetooth, WiFi, cellular, subGig
– AC and DC power, including battery powered devices designed for low-power draw.
– Bare Metal C, C-based RTOS and embedded Linux firmware.
– Cloud-based open-source software (Python/TypeScript/Elixir) across AWS, Azure, and GCP.
– Mobile applications built with either native or cross-platform technologies.
– Signal processing, anomaly detection, and other data science / machine learning techniques implemented across embedded, cloud, and mobile platforms.
Outcomes
– All Very client teams have the ability to reliably and repeatedly deploy cloud solutions on new and existing projects across AWS, Azure and GCP.
– Optimize and maintain existing cloud infrastructure both within Very and for our clients.
– Advancement of Very’s standard of delivery through collaboration with Directors and Executives, based on learnings from your client engagements.
Responsibilities
– Design and Architect Cloud Infrastructure: Work closely with our project teams to develop plans for cloud-based solutions, including architecture design, technology selection, and application design.
– Cloud Platform Management: Monitor and manage cloud infrastructures to ensure optimal performance, reliability, cost and security. Create processes to handle any updates or upgrades to the system as required.
– Security: Implement and maintain security controls to protect the cloud environment. Ensure all cloud solutions comply with applicable industry security standards.
– Troubleshooting and Support: Provide technical support and troubleshooting to resolve issues related to cloud systems across our engagements.
– Performance Analysis: Regularly review the performance of cloud infrastructure to identify potential areas for improvement. Understand how cloud tooling is used across our engagements.
– Collaboration and Training: Work closely with our delivery team to educate and train on the use of cloud resources.
– Documentation: Document and maintain best practices for deployment and management of cloud resources.
– Stay Current with Industry Trends: Continuously learn about the latest developments in cloud computing technologies, service models, and delivery models to stay at the forefront of the industry.
– Advisory Role: Advise management about the potential benefits and risks of proposed cloud solutions and initiatives.
Required Qualifications
Experience
– BS or higher in Computer Science or closely related field
– 10+ years of experience
– Participated in the launch of products to mass production, and acted as a leader in one or more instances

– Experience with large time series databases and workflows (AWS IoT Core / Azure IoT Hub)
– At scale device / fleet management through OTA updates
– At scale experience with multiple cloud providers
Compensation
Base Compensation
Between CAD $135,937 and $173,437 per year, commensurate with experience.
Variable Compensation
Up to 15% in the first year
