Job Position: Aquaculture Hatchery Team Leader

Position Overview

The Hatchery Team Leader (Broodstock & Nursery) is based at our Hatchery facility in Arno Bay, South Australia. The position reports to the Hatchery Supervisor and will work closely with the Hatchery Manager and on occasions with the Maintenance Supervisor and Fish Health team.  

The role is responsible for the overall management of the Yellowtail Kingfish Brood Stock population at the Hatchery facility, as well as Nursery management.  This includes maintaining high levels of cleanliness, light and temperature monitoring, regulation of feed levels, monitoring fish health (the identification of fish diseases, toxins, and environmental threats) and any necessary treatments.

Key elements of the role include coordinating the day-to-day Hatchery operations; larval rearing, rotifer, artemia, data entry and analysis with a focus on Brood Stock management and Nursery. 

The successful candidate will also assist with the planning and review of production and implementation of new standard operating procedures, practices and technologies together with assisting with the coordination of employees, equipment and resources across the Hatchery.

Effective communication and leadership skills are essential with the ability to guide and support team members, participate in a high level of engagement with the Hatchery Leadership Team, whilst prioritising safety focused behaviours and leading by example.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate employees, equipment, and resources across the Hatchery in conjunction with the Hatchery Leadership Team;
  • Improve team efficiencies and productivity by structuring workflow and coordinating assignments;
  • Ensure team activities comply with safety, regulatory and environmental guidelines;
  • Allocation and management of breeding populations and implementation of spawning regimes to meet production targets and timelines with the specific goal of maintaining genetic diversity and limiting inbreeding;
  • Manage production, collection, and incubation of eggs from breeding populations throughout the year, working closely with hatchery staff to meet strict delivery timelines;
  • Identifying and coordinating the selection of candidate brood stock from production populations in sea cages as part of Clean Seas’ selective breeding program;
  • Work with brood stock genetic program & ensure strategies are implemented;
  • Effective monitoring and management of fish growth, and movement and transportation from tank to tank and then to sea;
  • Monitoring growth rates to determine the next phase of fish management;
  • Monitoring and maintaining water quality to ensure optimum fish health and growing conditions with firm knowledge of systems such as OxyGuard;
  • Nursery management which includes grading, sorting, and weaning;   
  • Maintaining, reporting, and evaluating applicable hatchery activities;
  • Assisting with the planning and reviews of production and implementation of new standard operating procedures, practices, and technologies;
  • Manage and maintain a safe work environment.  

Required Skills & Experience

  • A relevant Degree or Diploma applicable to the role and function of the position;
  • A minimum of three (3) years related experience preferred; 
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills;
  • Experience leading teams and working in a team environment;
  • Good problem solving and decision-making skills with attention to detail;
  • Good organisational skills including a demonstrated ability to determine priorities and meet tight deadlines;
  • Basic computer literacy skills;
  • Strong coaching and development skills;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to positively influence organisational and team culture.
