Job Summary

Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Agriculture, Agribusiness and Environmental Sciences in the Dick and Mary Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (College). This is a 12-month, 50 % administration and 50 % teaching position with competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Specifically, this is a tenured 9-month faculty position within the department with teaching expectations in the fall and spring semesters, along with 3-months funding support as dept chair for administrative (50%) and summer research (50%) duties. The successful candidate will have credentials for appointment as a tenured, full professor. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research program.

Founded in 1925, TAMUK, a member of the Texas A&M University System, has a student body of over 6,500 students representing 35 states and 43 countries. The University is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with a 62% Hispanic undergraduate student population representing the South Texas region. The Department of Agriculture, Agribusiness and Environmental Sciences has a strong history of creating educators in Agricultural Education, as well as industry professionals in Ag Science, Plant, Soil and Environmental Sciences. The faculty located on campus in Kingsville and at the Texas A&M University System RELLIS campus located in Bryan, TX prepare students in Agribusiness and Agribusiness-Ranch Management degree options. The department also includes a Master of Science degree in Environmental Systems Management and a research-intensive graduate student training environment housed at the TAMU-Kingsville Citrus Center located in Weslaco, TX. Student hands-on learning is enhanced by the University Farm and greenhouses. The department currently has 220 undergraduate and 40 graduate (MS) students. The department also has a cooperative doctoral program in Horticulture with Texas A&M University, College Station.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Department Chair provides leadership and administrative guidance to:

Provide leadership in planning and supervising programs relevant to the department’s mission within the university system, manage departmental budgetary and financial matters, and assist in generating extramural support.

Teach undergraduate and/or graduate level courses.

Support student-centered experiential learning environments.

Promote quality instruction in undergraduate and graduate programs.

Actively involve faculty in the decision-making process, using appointed and elected committees as appropriate.

Foster excellence in research, teaching, domestic and international service, and other scholarly works.

Create an environment that fosters collegiality, and teamwork.

Timely adherence to college and university academic deadlines, assessments of faculty promotion and tenure packets, and departmental faculty annual evaluation.

Provides leadership in developing opportunities to engage in scholastic endeavors.

Hire and retain talented faculty, staff, and students.

Engage, interact, and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, university administrators, and alumni.

Lead departmental focused student recruiting and retention activities.

Supervise Departmental Administrative staff on campus.

Additional Responsibilities

Represent and promote the department on campus and in industry and scientific communities.

Occasional travel to Weslaco and Bryan, Texas to routinely connect with faculty and students located at the Citrus Center and RELLIS campus locations.

Collaborate and maintain positive working relationships with college academic advisors, dean’s office staff, and leadership representatives across the college and university.

Lead development and fundraising for various departmental activities.

Represents the department by attendance at graduation commencement events.

Continue personal professional development in administration, research and/or teaching.

Minimum Requirements

Earned doctorate in Agriculture Science, Plant and Soil Science, Environmental Science or related discipline with an emphasis in Agricultural Sciences.

The department chair will evaluate, counsel, and promote professional development of faculty, staff, and students.

Experience in administration, teaching, and research at a university.
