General Statement of Duties

The program coordinator for fitness and well-being is a key member of the Salem State University Campus Life and Recreation staff that offers programs including fitness, wellness, intramural sports, esports, informal recreation, co-curricular evening and weekend programming, and special events. Under the direct supervision of the director of campus life and recreation, the program coordinator will be responsible for the administration, supervision and development of a comprehensive fitness and well-being program while assisting with the operation of the Gassett Fitness Center and development of a robust programming calendar. The program coordinator supervises student staff and part-time instructors.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, promote, deliver, and evaluate a comprehensive and high-quality fitness and well-being program to include group exercise classes, fitness assessments, small group training, instructional programming, workshops, special events, and incentive programs
  • Create and administer fitness workshops for the campus community to deliver co-curricular evening and weekend programming. Oversee the development of new initiatives to meet the current needs of our campus community.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate staff in areas of responsibility
  • Supervise student employees in the day-to-day operations of the Gassett Fitness Center and assisting as needed. Responsibilities also include trouble shooting and oversight of building/facility operations and systems. Must possess a thorough knowledge of Recreation Management/Point of Sale system and department policies and procedures.
  • Provide leadership in the areas of student and recreational program development through the creation and implementation of continuing education, regular training sessions, and meetings.
  • Develop content and assist in the management of the online canvas student development and training portal for department
  • Plan, implement and oversee department programs and events, as well as associated budget and contract management
  • Supervise the utilization, operation, inventory, and maintenance of all fitness equipment and supplies. Assist with the development and execution of RFQ/RFP process as dictated by equipment refresh cycles.
  • Create opportunities for fitness center membership growth and work with campus and community partners as applicable
  • Thorough understanding of risk management protocols as it relates to areas of responsibility. Ability to develop risk management policies and procedures to ensure participant safety.
  • Follow department policies and procedures and serve on the weekend on-call rotation schedule
  • Conduct CPR/AED/First Aid certification courses for department staff
  • Maintain current knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively perform and/or teach and/or assess for a wide variety of group exercise classes and training programs, including the research of industry trends
  • Create and support a culture that promotes overall health and well-being in collaboration with campus partners
  • Assist with the growth and oversight of the employee well-being program in partnership with Human Resources
  • Assist with the development, promotion, implementation and oversight of the Outdoor/Weekend Adventures program consisting of offerings such as adventure trips (i.e., skiing, white water rafting), outdoor opportunities (i.e., paintball, hiking), fitness offerings (i.e. trail yoga, sunset yoga), and team building initiatives (i.e. ropes course). Assist with scheduling and recruitment for all offerings
  • Collaborate with campus partners and represent department throughout the year (i.e. Orientation, Accepted Students Day, First Year Seminar, etc.)
  • Coordinate and host nationally recognized workshops and certifications. Maintain community partnerships to ensure professional development of group exercise instructors and contract employees.
  • Assist with assessment efforts of the Student Life division and within the unit including basic tracking of activities, program evaluation, and measurement of learning outcomes. Evaluate, track, and compile statistical information for program areas including daily, weekly, and monthly measures.
  • Serve as an advocate for health and fitness within higher education and its support of student development and continual education. Provide education and outreach programs.
  • Follow Student Life and University policies and procedures. This may include serving as the emergency contact in the case of a student emergency related to areas of responsibility.
  • Assist and support major Student Life and University large scale events such as Orientation, Move-In and Commencement
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to students with a diversity of learning styles
  • Utilize Navigate in support of student success
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education, sports management, kinesiology or related field
  • Two or more years of experience overseeing fitness and wellness programming, preferably in a college or university setting
  • Two or more years of experience in successful management of student staff, preferably in a collegiate recreation program
  • Nationally Accredited Group Exercise certification
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a wide variety of group exercise classes, small group training programs, and work with members with a variety of needs and abilities
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
  • Membership and participation in the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA)

Preferred Qualifications: * Master’s degree in recreation, physical education, sports management, kinesiology or related field

  • Experience with Fusion point of sale/facility access software
  • Nationally Accredited Personal Training certification
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor certified or ability to obtain upon hire
  • Experience developing and delivering presentations to groups
  • Knowledge in assessment methods and activities

Working Conditions:

This is an on-site, in-person position which requires the ability to work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, and weekends, based on program and event needs.

Office activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and interaction with computer equipment; occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 30 pounds.
