We are looking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Biomedical Ethics (CBmE), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS).

The Centre for Biomedical Ethics (CBmE) was established in September 2006 in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine through a generous gift by the Chen Su Lan Trust. CBmE, directed by Prof Julian Savulescu, is a thriving centre for learning, teaching and research relating to ethical and legal aspects of healthcare and the biomedical sciences. We are responsible for the development and delivery of the Health Ethics, Law and Professionalism programme through all five years of the undergraduate medical curriculum in addition to offering postgraduate and continuing professional education courses in bioethics. Job Description

The appointed Research Fellow will contribute to the project “Care at home: Addressing new ethical challenges in contemporary ageing societies”. Associate Professor Michael Dunn is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the grant. Health policy changes in Singapore are placing increasing emphasis on the community and the home as the primary location for health and care services to be delivered, particularly for older adults and those with chronic illnesses. This project will seek to identify and analyse existing and newly emerging ethical challenges in delivering and co-ordinating care in these settings. Potential foci might include, but are not limited to:

  • Specifying the roles and ethical responsibilities of non-professional caregivers (e.g. family members, friends and neighbours) and para-professional caregivers (e.g. volunteers and foreign domestic workers) in this setting
  • Addressing intergenerational and wider social justice concerns within community-based approaches to care and support for older adults
  • Exploring the ethical justifications for adult safeguarding and protection interventions within local legal and policy frameworks
  • Determining ethically appropriate uses of artificial intelligence (AI) and other new assistive technologies in care practices within community and home care settings

The appointed Research Fellow will be given the freedom and opportunities to develop a sustainable program of ethics research on this broad topic, in light of their interests, methodological expertise and knowledge of the area. Protected time will also be provided to allow the Research Fellow to pursue their broader research interests and to develop their academic career, under the supervision of the PI.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of the Research Fellow are to:

  • Conduct literature reviews, including collation and synthesis of the literature
  • Work with the PI to identify and conduct research on important practical ethics research questions arising in the home and community care setting.
  • Design and conduct qualitative or survey-based empirical research, including the analysis of data, and/or undertake practical ethical analysis of identified ethical issues
  • Assist with applying for ethics approval and preparing regular reports to the Institutional Review Board and funding agencies, as required.
  • Lead and contribute to manuscript development, writing, editing and submission of articles for publication.
  • Present work for feedback and dissemination at workshops or conferences locally and internationally

The position is a 3-year, full-time appointment at the academic rank of Research Fellow. There is the possibility to move to a tenure-track position in the longer-term, depending on achievements in post. The start date is flexible but the successful candidate should ideally commence no later than 1st November 2023. Applicants will be evaluated based on the following selection criteria:

Qualifications

  • Essential criteria
  • A PhD in bioethics, or in a discipline relevant to bioethics (e.g. philosophy, law, sociology, public health, or political science) from a reputable university
  • Demonstrable and advanced understanding of ethical issues in health care practice
  • Skills in conducting and analysing qualitative research on ethical challenges in health or care settings and/or skills in undertaking normative philosophical analysis of ethical challenges in these settings
  • Proven track record of publication in the field of bioethics
  • Exemplary written English and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organization and management skills
  • Demonstrated aptitude for collaborative as well as independent work
  • Desirable criteria
  • Track record in research on the ethics of community health and social care, or on the ethics of home or long-term care practice
  • Demonstrable experience in empirical bioethics involving the integration of social science research methods and normative ethical analysis

Application

NUS offers highly competitive remuneration packages. The salary offered will be between S$6,000 – S$7,000 per month. A generous annual bonus will also be provided, subject to performance review. Health insurance and access to funds for academic travel are part of the staff benefits. Housing allowance and relocation expenses are also available for foreigners, but the entitlement depends on position title.
