Summary of Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Rodeo Coach will serve as the leader and head coach of the Murray State Rodeo team as well as the liaison between the Dean of the Hutson School of Agriculture, the rodeo team, and MSU Rodeo stakeholders. The Rodeo Coach will recruit rodeo student-athletes, oversee all aspects of student-athlete development including coaching, mentoring, and related duties, and manage, operate and maintain the facilities.

  • Provide overall management and leadership of the rodeo program by providing quality coaching and instruction to students participating in the college rodeo program, while enforcing safety regulations and procedures through supervision of students.
  • Plans, directs and coaches a rodeo program, developing student athletes to their fullest potential while being regionally competitive and ethically run, and ensuring NIRA rules and regulation compliance are met and followed.
  • Recruits rodeo team members and assists them in meeting individual and team goals. Recruits student athletes who have the ability to achieve academic and athletic success, and supports general student recruitment in cooperation with the admissions office.
  • Supervises, organizes and coordinates all rodeo events and activities, including attending scheduled rodeo practices, classes and all Ozark Region NIRA rodeos. Select and/or designate team members who will be competing for school points.
  • Coordinates and ensures rodeo stock and arena are well maintained.
  • Responsible for arranging pick-up men and bullfighters for rough stock practice and responsible for arranging clinicians to provide support to the team.
  • Supervise assistant coaches, rodeo team officers, and other contributors to the team’s success.
  • Lead, organize and conduct Murray State University’s annual college Rodeo, including arranging for announcers, stock contractors, ticket sales, advertisement, setup and teardown, etc.
  • Serve as a team representative to the Friends of Racer Rodeo, attending all meetings and providing updates, guidance and recommendations.
  • Develop and implement a successful fund-raising plan to meet program needs, goals, and objectives.
  • Responsible for the care of all livestock, including reviewing pen conditions prior to rodeo practice for safety/function and planning care during breaks and holidays.
  • Manage the grounds around the Heathcott Rodeo Barn, livestock pens and arena. Responsible for management of Heathcott Rodeo Barn aisles, tack and other aspects of building maintenance.
  • Oversee the transportation of bucking stock or any stock bought, sold, borrowed, or leased when needed.
  • Develop and manage the rodeo program annual budget, monitoring expenditures including allocation of scholarships, completing all documentation requirements, and managing the rodeo program financial affairs effectively, ethically, and innovatively within the constraints of approved budget.
  • Responsible for the affairs of the rodeo office, including submitting and organizing all rodeo team paperwork, such as entry forms, eligibility forms, call-in and drawn-outs, and list of students attending official rodeos.
  • Prepare and submit written reports for any rodeo injuries.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education Requirements

  • High school diploma required.

Minimum Experience and Skill Requirements

  • The equivalent or combination of 5 years of rodeo competition or coaching experience is required.
  • Advanced knowledge of collegiate rodeo events, such as breakaway roping, barrel racing, team roping, goat tying, calf roping, bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, and the ability to assist with the coaching of these events as they pertain to NIRA competition.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to drive a truck and trailer, operate tractors, and other large equipment.

Physical Demands

  • Working conditions will include outdoor and indoor practices, walking, working with cattle, horseback riding, and carrying feed and hay.
