Stellar Farmers Markets Bilingual Educators Bengali: The Foundation for Public Health of New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, FPHNYC has partnered with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Health (DOMHH) to incubate innovative public health programs implemented by the DOHMH to promote community health across the city. It typically facilitates new and unconventional partnerships between the government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations accelerate the delivery of demonstration projects, expand successful pilot projects, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities in New York City.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare for and orally interpret in-person, and potentially occasional virtual, nutrition education workshops and cooking demonstrations from English to Bengali
  • Collaborate with a team of three or more at each workshop site which includes a Nutrition Educator, responsible for leading the team and implementing the nutrition education lesson, and a Culinary Educator, responsible for implementing the cooking demonstration
  • Assist with and ensure proper set-up and breakdown of the tent, cooking equipment, and educational materials
  • Assist with the preparation and implementation of nutrition education sessions
  • Follow curriculum and ensure integrity and fidelity of programming
  • Market and promote programs at farmer’s markets to ensure the minimum required level of participation is achieved
  • Assist with data collection at markets
  • Maintain all COVID-19 safety protocols at workshop sites
  • Maintain and encourage environmentally sustainable practices at workshop sites
  • Assist with food preparation for cooking demonstrations, as needed
  • Attend optionally but highly encouraged monthly meetings held virtually or at DOHMH offices in Long Island City, Queens (Monday afternoons)

Qualifications:

  • Fluent in Bengali
  • Vibrant personality and excellent presentation, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse populations
  • Willing and able to stand and work outdoors for long periods of time in inclement weather
  • Willing and able to regularly lift and transport items weighing up to 25 lbs (to and from storage and workshop locations every market day per week)
  • Commit to at least 1-2 working days per week

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to write in Bengali
  • Learn how to interpret information orally and translate written material from English to Bengali
  • Experience working in a team
  • Understanding and experience with regional food systems and food security issues and the underlying causes of health inequalities in New York communities
  • Individuals with knowledge and interest in nutrition and food security issues in New York are highly preferred
