Job Description

Department Summary:

UC Cooperative Extension Alameda County is a local problem-solving center, part of a statewide applied research and extension program. With offices located in Hayward, Cooperative Extension programs in Alameda County include UC Master Gardeners, Urban Agriculture, UC Calfresh Healthy Living, Community Development, Urban Integrated Pest Management, Livestock and Natural Resource, Environmental Horticulture, Nutrition Education, and 4-H Youth Development. Alameda County Master Gardener Program works to serve the diverse communities within Alameda County. As trained agents of the University of California, their purpose is to extend research based knowledge and information on home gardening. Volunteers answer horticulture questions and support four demonstration gardens in the county.

Position Summary:

The Urban Agriculture/ Master Gardener Coordinator for Alameda County will coordinate outreach and education efforts and provide technical assistance to support urban agriculture, and home and community gardening in Alameda County. The coordinator will provide leadership and training to the UCCE Alameda County Master Gardeners, who provide outreach and education on home and community gardening. The coordinator will also provide technical assistance to urban agriculturalist and develop, design, and evaluate educational materials to support and expand opportunities for urban agriculture in Alameda County.

This position is a career appointment that is 100% fixed.

Pay Scale: $52,200/year to $70,300/year

Key Responsibilities:

15%

Plans and develops new programs and curriculum, and adjusts existing courses and curriculum in a continuing education environment.

15%

Participates in developing strategic market plans and target audiences.

10%

Collects and compiles data and prepare reports as necessary to meet funding and reporting requirements.

5%

Develops, prepares and reconciles budget for program.

30%

Plans, schedules and conducts trainings and provides technical assistance one-on-one and to groups.

25%

Provides day-to day management and oversight of the Alameda County Master Gardener Program

Requirements:

  • Associate degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Thorough and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; i.e. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.

Preferred Skills:

  • Continuing education in related field required.
  • Thorough knowledge of organization policies and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of and skill in delivering programs.
  • Thorough skills to conduct needs assessment and development of new presentations / courses to meet organizational needs.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must comply with regulatory agency reporting requirements (California’s Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act).
  • Must possess valid California Driver’s License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.

This is a designated position requiring a background check and may require fingerprinting due to the nature of the job responsibilities. UC ANR does hire people with conviction histories and reviews information received in the context of the job responsibilities.
