About the branch:

Clean, safe and sustainable drinking water is critical to life and thriving Yukon communities. Community Operations operates water treatment plants in unincorporated communities and oversees the delivery of drinking water to some areas. The branch also ensures the safe and sustainable hauling of wastewater in Old Crow.

The branch manages 16 solid waste facilities and supports 13 recycling depots and two recycling processors across the territory.

Community Operations is implementing an environmentally and financially responsible regional model for solid waste in the Yukon based on the recommendations from the Ministerial Committee on Solid Waste, which includes representation from municipalities, the Association of Yukon Communities, and Yukon government officials.

About the job:

This position is responsible for assisting with the day to day operations and administration of solid waste, recycling and household hazardous waste programs in unincorporated communities in the territory. Approximately 80% of this position is field-based and requires unaccompanied travel to the communities, frequent hauling of a tandem axle dump trailer, performing maintenance tasks, and liaising with contractors and members of the public. Approximately 20% of this position is office based and includes working with the Community Operations Supervisors to; plan future projects and tasks, track inspections and required follow-up, managing contracts such as those for hazardous waste and ensuring projects are on budget.

Additional Information:

Conditions of Employment: Valid Yukon class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.

Job Requirements: Willingness to travel frequently, most often involving day trips, but with some occasional overnight trips.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Experience performing basic mechanical, construction and maintenance repairs/projects.
  • Experience managing projects.
  • Experience ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Experience working with the public and contractors.

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the above qualifications may be equally considered.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Suitability:

  • Knowledge of solid waste disposal, hazardous waste management, waste recycling, and composting.
  • Experience coordinating logistics.
  • Ability to review operations for compliance.
  • Ability to use tact and persuasive communication skills when dealing with stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of workplace hazards and safety, its application, and any applicable legislation.
  • Ability to work independently and be adaptable to work situations.
  • Knowledge of MS Office (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, databases, etc.)
