We are looking for a Production Engineer, responsible for overseeing and supporting surface mining activities and project work as assigned to ensure that the goals of the department are achieved in a safe, cost effective and efficient manner.

Reporting to the Engineering Superintendent, the Production Engineer fulfills a wide range of technical mining engineering functions, including drill & blast design, short & long-range planning, dispatch supervision and operational support. Located at the Diavik diamond mine site in the N.W.T., you will be working on a 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off rotation (FIFO) with a company charter plane picking up in Edmonton.

Working collaboratively with all operational and functional departments, you will be responsible for:

  • Preparing 2-week, 3-month and 12-month surface mining plans and designing drill and blast patterns;
  • Analyzing and reconciling previous month’s performance and adjusting future plans/designs;
  • Supervising and managing a team of dispatchers and dispatch technicians, ensuring data relevance, accuracy and utility;
  • Undertaking field inspections of work areas, verifying designs and other QA/QC functions;
  • Identifying and implementing opportunities for improvement within surface operations;
  • Records, monitors, updates and closes out actions arising from productivity implementations, providing progress reports to stakeholders;
  • Assisting with the preparation of budgets and winter road orders;
  • Mentoring junior engineers and co-op students;
  • Developing and leveraging strong working relationships with key internal and external customers in order to drive continuous improvement;
  • Presenting designs, plans and project progression to superintendents and managers;

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • A degree in mining engineering with a strong safety mindset;
  • 5+ years of surface mining experience; operational experience is an asset;
  • 3+ years design experience in Vulcan or Civil3D;
  • Ability to use and decipher Power BI reports;
  • Valid driver’s license along with willingness to work in rugged conditions;
  • Ability to influence, negotiate, and resolve conflicts to reach consensus and common goals;
  • Experience in project leadership, change management and cross functional team leadership;
  • Excellent oral, written and active-listening skills;
  • Survey experience is an asset;
  • Knowledge of surface mine engineering practices, blasting, drilling and mine services, industry practices and safety regulations and standards;
  • Knowledge of project management practices, including budgeting and scheduling;
  • Highly effective organizational, time management and analytical skills;
  • Ability to take initiative, drive projects forward and work independently;
  • Proficiency with MS Office, skilled at developing & managing spreadsheets, graphing and ability to learn new software.

This role is an integral member of the project engineering and surface operations team. If the incumbent is demonstrating the right skillset and abilities, there are opportunities for development through coverage of both the Engineering and Operations superintendent positions.
